From the legendary tale of King
Roymata, dive the mysterious 'Underworld caverns that purportedly
led from Devil's Point to Hat island.
Located
on the western most point of Efate's mainland, the tunnels and
caverns of Tukutuku have been formed by the erosion of coral limestone
during lower sea-levels. Despite the proximity to the shoreline,
it's a stunning dive simply because of the amazing system of tunnels
and swim-throughs. Most of the reef in the aerial photos is honeycombed
with caverns. Illuminated by shafts of sunlight from overhead
cracks, the interconnected caverns have an ethereal beauty. From
the outside coral wall, most tunnels lead to a miniature 'elf-garden'
lagoon inside the reef (see arrow). Large, shy cod and occasional
grouper move into the small tunnels as divers swim by. It is virtually
impossible to become lost although a torch will enhance your experience.
Outside,
the coral is particularly vibrant with richly coloured hydro-corals
growing along the walls of the cuttings. Dugong and reef sharks
are often seen. But the caverns do not end here, they keep going
all the way around Tukutuku Point and into the harbour. They cannot
all be explored in one dive but due to the location, different
cavern systems can be seen in different weather conditions.
This
site is generally dived on a full day Sailaway Cruise operated
from Vila, or on overnight Sailaway
Safaris.
